This is the actual log cabin where my fabulous grandmother lived until, nearly, the end. When she lived there it was still natural log (no brown paint) and it was NEVER boarded up. I visited this historic site when I was on my Minnesota Book Tour in 2014. I walked all over the property – abandoned by the summer-only crowd – and took tons of pictures. When I got back to my rental car my keys were missing! I slowly retraced my steps and I could hear my grandma chuckling. I finally found the keys, wedged between two boards on the dock – OVER the WATER!! I bent down to pick them up, and there on the top of the dock post, was a small cluster of bright red lichen…red was her favorite color. Ah, Rita, I miss ya!
